5th SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION 2008
“FOLLOWING THE GREAT WHITE SHARK”

FROM TALAMONE TO GANSBAAI

MAREMMAN PEOPLE LEAD THE 5TH RESEARCH EXPEDITION ON THE WHITE SHARK
 LOCATED IN SOUTH AFRICA
SUPPORTED BY THE “ASSOCIAZIONE POSIDONIA” AND  “UNIVERSITY OF CALABRIA”

ASSOCIAZIONE POSIDONIA(www.acquario-posidonia.com) – It’s 5 years in a row and the group of researchers and admirers, led by Biologist Micarelli in charge for the maintenance of the Lake Aquarium of Orbetello and Professor at the University of Siena, and Sara Spinetti student in Environmental Science, are approaching to leave to South Africa for another research campaign. Cooperating with Dr.Emilio Sperone, Professor at the University of Calabria and supported by “Posidonia”, an Association based in Maremma, and by Environmentalist Association of Calabria, this year, as the previous, data and information will be collected in order to study the different and composite biological and ecological aspects of the Great White Shark populating the South African coasts; the operating base will be located at Gansbaai 200 km far from Cape Town.
This year the research will be focused on the social intraspecific behaviours and on the surface hunting techniques. The data collected so far have been examined at the yearly Convention of the Italian Organisation of Marine Biology (2006), at the Italian Zoologists Association (2006 and 2007), at the yearly Convention of the European Elasmobranch Association that had place in   France in 2007 and where the outcomes of the research have been detailed in cooperation with Dr.Serena  an ARPAT manager.

Squalo BiancoData gathered till now and focusing more 120 different specimen of white sharks, are going to provide an interesting picture of the exceptional predator behaviour, very selective in choosing the preys to hunt and not so aggressive as you can imagine. The original information about the interactions and social hierarchy among sharks, already collected in the passed year but going to be investigated deeper this year, have stimulated a deep interest.

The information collected have given also the opportunity, in the 27th of March, to Sara Andreotti a student of University of Trieste to present the first experimental thesis made in Italy on the White Shark having Dr.Micarelli as Co-Chairman.

UNIVERSITA DELLA CALABRIA - DIPARTIMENTO ECOLOGIAOthers students from different Universities: Siena, Trieste, Cosenza, Bologna and Pisa are taking part to the current expedition.

The expedition will take place from the 31st of March to the 9th of April and during this period  all the attendants will be physically engaged because of the several missions in the sea aimed to the data gathering in the morning, the required certification of those information in the afternoon and  the symposiums in the evening.

Michael RutzenThe indigenous Michael Rutzen will guide in South Africa the team from Maremma; Rutzen, has already been in Maremma in 2005 in occasion of an high-quality Symposium dealing with the interactions between the White Sharks and the human; the Symposium was arranged by Micarelli, Spinetti and Tarantino, at that time working for the Mediterranean Aquarium of Argentario. Many reportages from  National Geographic and Discovery channel have been dedicated to Rutzen, one of the few able to dive without a cage strictly in touch with the white sharks and whose brilliant knowledge of  the marine ecosystem populated by the white sharks is internationally recognized. Rutzen will occupy the group with several stories in the evening and will show in exclusive to the group his last documentary: Sharkman telling the Freediving techniques and teaching the reverence for this extraordinary animal: the White Shark.

Those who love sharks are encouraged to visit  www.oltrepensiero.com to be updated on the daily activities of the expedition; in our website you can find, as the passed year, news, summarizes, photos and videos from the research expedition in South Africa
