Even this year (March 25 – April 2) will take place the Shipping on the Study of Great White Sharks in South Africa, now the sixth edition since 2003, this time will be sponsored by the Posidonia Association, in addition to other important co-sponsors like the magazine Oltrepensiero.it, EASYDIVE, Gross Center-Euronics (Bovalino), etc.. and with the support of the Department of Ecology of \’ University of Calabria and the Calabrian Natural History Museum. Participants, in addition to the group organizer and responsible for the activities of study, have already been selected. Oltrepensiero.it will closely follow the mission plan as it has done for the 4th and 5th edition of which you can find all the details in specific section dedicated to them permanently. In addition to YouTube, the channel “Videopensiero” (the Oltrepensiero.it Web TV), on-line are the fascinating movies made during the last mission, by our editor Enrico Rabboni on behalf of the Posidonia and Hundred Shark Productions and have obtained to date in a period of one year (as of 14 March 2009), over 75,000 views. Even Italian Language’s Swiss Television will monitor the activities of the group with reports that will appear during the broadcast LATELE.

15 participants in front line to expedition between biologists and experts. Among them no less than 7 students from the Faculty of Biology and Natural Sciences of Cosenza, Pisa and Trieste, someone already in the second experience as Gabriele Sanchini, while for others it is the first experience as collaborators in data collection. Very important is the presence of the diver Franco Iosa, assistant to collect photos, which will dive in the waters of the Indian Ocean for the third time.The data collected in addition to being integrated and compared with those of previous years may be used by students to prepare three-year or specialist thesis if they will find it helpful to their university course. In 2008 Sara Andreotti has graduated with a thesis on specialized aspects of Ethology of the White Shark (the first in Italia), using material collected in 2007 and made available by the scientific responsable: Micarelli and Sperone.

The data collection this year, will be again on: the social aspects of predatory behavior and prevalence of sight and smell in the selection of passive prey.
In 2008, results collected during the expedition were presented in national congresses, Italian Society of Marine Biology – June, Cesenatico, The Italian Society of Ethology – September, Cosenza. Also, on specialistic journals, there are the results of many years working on Social Behavior in the predators by Sperone, Micarelli .
In recent years, during shipment, were seen about 150 different White Sharks, about twenty readings in the area have been made by the scientific officers of the Mission and local experts such as Michael Rutzen and biologists such as Michael Scholl and Jenna Cains that for years have studied these animals around Dyer Island considered the world capital of white sharks for their many appearances.

During the next mission, evening readings will be taken by managers and coordinators of Shipping and will, as in past years on Biology and Evolution elasmobranch (Micarelli), Aspects of Ecology of the White Shark (Sperone), Methods of data collection (Andreotti), Conservation of Sharks (Sperone), Techniques Video cameras (Rabboni), Freediving with Great White and Dyer Island Ecosystem (Rutzen)

During the expedition the Head of Video cameras, Enrico Rabboni, will continue gathering images for the completion of the documentary on which the Association Posidonia and the Hundred Shark Productions are working. The first documentary on research activities for the exclusive use of leaders and participants has been already achieved in 2007 by the same Rabboni which will be supplemented by material that they hope to achieve in 2009.
Large quantity of photos, video and scientific harvest achieved in previous years was also presented to the general public during the exhibition held last summer in Marina di Grosseto in Maremma entitled “Il Mondo del Grande Squalo Bianco – Biologia e Protezione” (The World of the Great White Shark – Biology and Protection ).
At the end of the trip, for divers with PADI teaching, will be awarded the patent with the specialty: White Shark Awareness Diver by M. Rutzen.
