La giornata è cominciata un po’ a rilento a causa della delusione di non aver ottenuto il famoso permesso, per l’immersione con i leoni marini.
The day has begun slowly because of the disappointment for the denied permission to dive together with the sea-lions.
Verso le 11 abbiamo affrontato un mare mosso come solo l’oceano può essere, con onde alte quanto colline, tanto che dall’ incavo non si scorgevano le barche che ci circondavano a pochi metri. Arrivati sul posto la gabbia è stata calata in acqua, la sensazione provata dai pochi impavidi che si sono immersi era quella di trovarsi all’interno di una lavatrice in centrifuga. Anche la visibilità non è stata ottimale, accentuando la difficoltà di ripresa e visione subacquea.
At 11.00 a.m. we faced a rough sea as only the ocean can be, the waves were high as hills and from the bottom of the concavity we couldn’t see the boats around us. When we arrived to the expected position the cage was drown under the water; the feeling the brave had was the same they could have in a washing machine during its spin-dryer. The visibility was not adequate increasing the problems during the video recording under the water.

Fortunatamente abbiamo goduto del fondamentale apporto di Michael Rutzen che ha dimostrato tutta la sua abilità ed esperienza nel trattare con i grandi squali bianchi, sottraendo la preda passiva con lentezza e permettendo fino all’ultimo istante agli animali di osservare la situazione. In questo modo gli squali parevano incuriositi a tal punto che non si limitavano ad un solo avvicinamento ma continuavano a nuotare più e più volte attorno all’imbarcazione. Questa tecnica, grazie alla quale gli animali si sono avvicinati tanto da toccare a volte la gabbia, ha permesso a tutti noi di godere di uno spettacolo indimenticabile, come dimostrano alcune immagini.
Fortunately we enjoyed of Michael Rutzen support who has fully demonstrated his ability and experience in treating with the great white sharks; he used to pull back the passive prey slowly allowing the sharks to read the situation till the last second. Doing that the sharks appeared curious and they didn’t approach to boat one time only but they still continued to swim around the “Barracuda” more and more. Thanks to this technique the sharks were so closely to the cage and touched it a lot of times from our side we had the opportunity to see an unforgettable sight as the photos can demonstrate.
In totale nella giornata odierna sono stati catalogati 8 nuovi squali per un totale al quarto giorno della spedizione di 28 squali, dei quali abbiamo etogrammi completi sulle modalita’ di predazione ed anche sulle interazioni sociali. A fine giornata la conferenza tenuta dal Prof. Emilio Sperone sulla conservazione e l’importanza di proteggere dal rischio d’estinzione il grande squalo bianco, ha aggiunto a questa proficua giornata ulteriori motivazioni (…non che ne servissero…) per proseguire la nostra ricerca.

Domani è prevista una tempesta, quindi dedicheremo la giornata alla visita di Cape Town e al suo meraviglioso acquario.
Tomorrow a storm is forecasted therefore we’ll take the opportunity to visit Cape Town and the fantastic aquarium.
